Gold for Australia the perfect end for Mark Knowles
Mark Knowles (AUS) began the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in style, carrying the Australian flag into the Opening Ceremony.
And Australia’s hockey captain ended it on a high note as he led his country to a sixth straight Commonwealth Games gold medal with a 2-0 win over Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre on Saturday 14 April.
The win was the perfect way for Knowles to finish his glittering career, bowing out with four Commonwealth Games gold medals from Melbourne in 2006, Delhi 2010, Glasgow 2014 and GC2018.
England won the bronze with a 2-1 defeat of India.
Not so perfect for the host nation was the defeat in the gold-medal game by New Zealand in the women’s tournament, with the Black Sticks upsetting the Hockeyroos 4-1.
Bronze again went to England, who defeated India 6-0.
The opening game of the tournament produced the biggest upset as the women from Wales toppled India 3-2, but the Welsh girls were almost humbled themselves by Ghana’s women, making their Commonwealth Games debut, who pushed their opponents all the way in the classification match for ninth and tenth places before losing on a shoot-out.
