Jordy Simmonds – Miss Universe Australia Finalist Interview
The search to find the next Miss Universe Australia is underway, with National finalists preparing to touch down in Melbourne later this month ahead of the national finals held at the Sofitel on Collins June 28.
We are chatting with Jordy Simmonds, from NSW who will be competing for the 2018 title of Miss Universe Australia.
So why don’t you tell our readers a little about yourself?
Hi, I’m Jordy, and I am 25 from Newcastle NSW. I am super passionate about realising potential, being happy and living a healthy life. I am pursuing a career that will help others. I chose to do Miss Universe to step out of my comfort zone and work on my self-confidence.
So you’ve just returned from the Miss Universe Finalists trip to the Amazing Allia Hotels in Bali… How was the experience?
The time spent at Alila in Bali was beyond what I ever expected. We stayed in their resorts in Ubud, Seminyak and Uluwatu. And each location was completely different; I don’t think I could favour one in particular.
We know there was an amazing program of things for you all, what was your highlight?
My highlight was definitely spending time with the special needs school that came to visit us at Alila Ubud. I think that one day I’d really like to work with children, so this experience inspired me the most. I also loved keeping active, every morning we had an activity. And I also really enjoyed getting to know the girls and socialising at dinner each night.
So now you’re home and having undergone the best prep we can think of you know the sun, surf and Bali …. it’s not long till the national finals in Melb… how are you feeling in the lead-up and what sort of preparation are you doing, before finals week commences?
I am feeling excited to head to Melbourne to reunite with everyone. In the lead up to the nationals I am just trying to stay focused, energised, and balanced. I love to read which really clarifies how I feel. Exercise always helps keep me positive too.
With so many of you all bringing an individual flair to the competition, what do you think will set you apart from the other contestants?
That is definitely one fantastic thing about miss universe is that you don’t feel like you have to fit into a certain expectation. Everyone is so unique. I believe that I stand out from other through my personality. I am a little bit more nurturing and sometimes quieter. I’m the person people feel comfortable coming to, to talk about their worries. I have a silly personality and make people laugh, and I’m always trying to look out for everyone. And being kind is the most common compliment I get. So I think that’s how I differ from others.
Speaking of being unique we all have different motivations, what is something that motivates you daily or you would say is your passion?
I have been through a lot in my life, so I really believe a daily motivation for me is improvement. I am always trying to do better than yesterday. I want to be the best and happiest version of myself.
What is something people might find interesting about yourself?
I think a lot of people find it interesting that both my parents are in the army and I’ve moved around a lot for their work.
Where is your favourite place in the world to wind down and relax?
I really love to travel and I think anywhere near the ocean is my favourite place to relax. Although I only live two blocks back from the beach in my, so I always find myself walking down and sitting on the grassy hill to read or watch the ocean.
The Miss Universe program has a long and proud history and focuses on helping women become the best versions of themselves, how do you think your experience so far will help move you forward in life?
This is my third year doing miss universe. And not because I really want to be Miss Universe, but because it has helped me the most in helping me believe in myself. I really think this year it is going to help me push myself to be more confident and realise that I can accomplish whatever I want to be in life, I just have to go for it. I don’t have to hold back or be scared any longer.
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
I think funny things happen to me all of the time. And I have my roommate Rheannon to thank for that. We have very similar personalities, and we’re always laughing with one another. We came home the other night at the same time, and she had some music playing, so we just started dancing with one another when shakier came on. Because, why not? And we’re just always being silly together.
Name five things you can’t live without?
Avocado, the tv show friends, lip balm, lemon water and cheese with pasta.
How would your closest friend describe you?
Cass, my best friend, would probably describe me as being strong, kind, compassionate and supportive.
What is my favourite ice cream and topping?
I think what people have on their ice cream says a lot about them… and it ultimately gives you something to bond over unless you re totally disgusted, then you can’t be friends haha.
Almost every night when I grew up with my dad, he got me ice cream after dinner (spoilt). My absolute favourite is the vanilla bean with strawberry topping and sprinkles! So original but delicious.
